Gaston, yes he is a male. Males have the red "moustache" along the bottom of their jaw line. A female's would be black. ;) I have another shot that I'm going to be submitting to a magazine of him taking a huge white grub out of the tree.
OMG what a great capture!! I have not had such luck, though we have a woodpecker living in our tree. And the days when I have been able to get the other birds, the sun goes behind a cloud!
